Get out your paint brushes and start thinking about our spring show! The show will be held at Gene Needham's gallery, "Logan Fine Art and Gallery" and will be judged. It will take place during the April 13th Gallery Walk. This is a chance for us to show the paintings we have been having so much fun creating. Not only do we get the opportunity to share with each other but we also share with our community.

Cache Valley Plein Air Group

Museum hours: Tuesday, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Wednesday - Saturday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Juror: Nicholas Simmons. Important dates: March 15: Last day to receive entries; April 2: Jury notifications sent; April 28: Deliver paintings; May 1: UWS Meeting with juror demo; May 15: Opening of Exhibit; May 18: UWS Reception and Awards; June 16: Last day of exhibit; June 19 - 21: pick-up paintings. Eccles Community Art Center Annual Black and White Show

The Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden will intake work for the 13th Black & White Competition on Friday, January 27, 2012 from 9 to 4 and Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 9 to 3 p.m. No work will be accepted after 3 p.m. on January 28th. This competition is open to resident Utah artists working in all media. The work is limited in color to black, white and shades of gray. Entry fee: $7 per piece. Artists are limited to two entries. UWS-CVC Update: Spring Show, Mini-Show, etc

Our Spring Show will be April 13th which is the night of the Gallery Walk. The show will be at Gene Needham's gallery, "Logan Arts." There is plenty of space in the back of the art shop for a good show. Get your brushes out and get ready for this one! Also, keep in mind that the Mini Show for the Utah Watercolor Society will be held in Logan again this year. This is a lot of fun and is well organized by our own Lynda Burruss. Paintings must be no bigger than 12"X12" including the frame. The show will be held at the Thatcher Mansion and opening night will be in July on Gallery Walk night which is yet to be announced.

Our February 14th special Valentines meeting will be presented by Eiko Anderson. She will share her art experiences from her resent trip to China.

Artwork Donations Needed

SLC's The Children's Center is looking for members of the Utah Watercolor Society to donate art to help raise funds for the center. The Children's Center is honored to partner with the members of the Utah Watercolor Society to hallmark a 50th anniversary celebration. On Thursday, February 9, The Children's Center is hosting a women's luncheon at Gallivan Center during which the art will be sold. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the little children who are in treatment at our facilities. In this partnership, the contributing members of the Utah Watercolor Society will receive recognition and be able to provide information about themselves and their art. Lester Lee Workshop

The UWS-CVC will host a 2 1/2 day workshop with Lester Lee at the Presbyterian Church in Logan. The workshop will be held 4-8 p.m. on Thurs. Jan. 12, 9-4 on Fri. Jan. 13 and 9-4 Sat. Jan. 14. The cost will be $125. For more information, please contact Sherrill Gordon at 435-881-4718.

Russell is a life long professional painter in both watercolor and oil paints. It is a great opportunity for us to meet him and have him share his work with us. You won't want to miss this meeting.

December 13th is the Cache Valley Chapter member meeting and holiday social: gift exchange, buffet plus we will have our own Lynda Burruss discuss "How to see elements and principles of design." Bring up to two of your paintings to critique. Bring others if you would like, we would love to see what you are doing, but we will limit critiques. Critiques start at 6:30 p.m.

Food assignments are as follows: A-E salads, F-L desserts, M-Z main dish

Gifts may be something small you have painted, an art supply, cards or something you have made. If you do not want to bring a gift come anyway and enjoy the company.

November Update

Thanks to everyone who entered our "Fall Show." It was a great success and all of the paintings were amazing and fun to see. I always enjoy the variety of subject matter and techniques. You will need to pick up your paintings on Tuesday, November 1st, from 12:00 noon to 5:p.m.

The second Tuesday of the month, November 8, is our next meeting at the Logan Library. Critiques will begin at 6:30 p.m. and our regular meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. Our guest speaker will be Levi Sim. Levi is a full time professional photographer. His studio is in the Thatcher Mansion. Check out his website (sdesigns photography.com/) Levi will discuss design, lighting and adapting our photos to our paintings. We will see some of his own artistry, so be sure to set this night aside for some fun.

Bring your T-shirt designs if you have done one. It would be nice to have some T-shirts for Christmas.

The Utah Watercolor Society will meet on November 1 at 8:00 p.m. at The Salt Lake Community College Gail MIller Conference Center, 9750 So. 300 W., Sandy, Ut. 801-957-2002. Osral Allred will be presenting that evening. Also, we will be presenting Jerry Fuhriman as an Honorary Member of UWS-CVC. He has donated much of his time and talent to the Cache Valley Chapter and the community.

The " Plein Air Painters" will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00a.m. to 12:00 noon at The Senior Center. Bring whatever you would like to work on and enjoy the company. They have way too much fun!

Logan Fine Art Juried Salon

Logan Fine Art Gallery offers you three exhibition opportunities for this coming fall and winter.

First opportunity: Salon
A juried salon with cash prizes will be held in October. Entries are due by September 24. Artists may submit up to two paintings or sculptures with a $12 fee per entry. The awards will be announced at a reception held on October 7, 2011. Best of show will be awarded $2,000; second place $1,000, third place $500, and fourth, fifth, and sixth places $250.

Second opportunity: Silent Auction
A silent auction will also be held in October and will be advertised nationally in Western Art Collector magazine. To participate in the auction, the artist's work from the salon simply continues to remain in the LFA Gallery through the auction, which is October 17-22. The gallery will retain a 30% commission on sales.

Third opportunity: Christmas season
Artwork from the salon and auction may continue to remain in the LFA gallery for the Christmas season. Logan Fine Art will continue to advertise regionally during this sales season. The gallery will retain a 50% commission on sales.

If staying with a member of CVC, meet your hostess at the paint-out for directions to their home, etc. Because of various arrival times you may leave at any time to go get lunch, eat beforehand or bring your lunch before checking in at AWHC and return free wearing your wrist-band.

Carl Purcell Workshop

We are so fortunate to have had Carl Purcell bring his many talents to the UWS-CVC group last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Carl is the author of North Light Book's "Painting With Your Artist's Brain", "Drawing With Your Artist's Brain", and the combined version "Your Artist's Brain". Carl shared art, stories, tips, songs, and even a Scottish recipe as he taught his method of using shapes and values in our art instead of identifying objects. Guest Artist, Jeannie Millecam will be demonstrating the use of Pigma Pens in watercolor. If you want to join in, bring a pigma pen and watercolor supplies.
Remember we will still be doing Artist Trading Cards (ATC's). It would be great if all members would make 5 ATCs to trade at the meeting. What ever amount you make you can trade and get back. ATCs are classified and strictly measured at 2 ½" X 3 ½" and in our case will be a “One of a Kind” original mini watercolor. You can round or square the 4 corners. Utrecht will not be coming as they could not work it out.

The schedule will work this way: Tuesday will be the primary day for painting out....however, Thursdays will be a second chance or the painters can paint both days. If the weather on Thursday isn't good....the group may still paint at the senior center in Logan. Most people like to get started by 9 am and finish by noon, but that can vary.

I do want to caution that it is not advisable to go to any isolated place alone. So, be sure to team up with one or more other persons.

Gallery Walk Spring Show

"Varieties" is the name of the Gallery Walk Spring Show coming up this April 8th. Have your artwork ready by the 7th to hang. For ease of hanging on the walls please have wires in the back of the frame. No sawtooth hardware. We will need lots of easels for table display and tall floor easels. Thank you.

What can you bring to show? All medium...............cool................Oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed, collage, fiber and photographs. Create work from all sources, any size, any mat color. This should be really fun to see the work and all the "varieties". All of you are so creative and talented. The location is at the Iron Gate Grill on Federal Avenue. Burns Supper

Four of our members displayed artful watercolors at the Burns Supper (a reception to celebrate Scottish heritage) last Saturday evening at Utah State University: Kathryn Grover, Ann DeWeese, Rosemary Parkinson and Dianne Siegfreid. The unique impressions that each produced to celebrate the Scottish heritage of the 2010 Cache Celtic Festival and Games were enjoyed by the over 160 guests.

Two of our members were winners at the Utah Watercolor Society Fall Show: Lynda Burruss won an Award of Merit for her “A Bird Came Down the Walk” and Kristi Grussendorf won Juror’s Award for “Resolution.”

Two of our members have been accepted into the
36th Annual Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibition: Dianne Adams for her painting titled, “Cowboys,” and Kristi Grussendorf for her painting titled, “Vegas.”
And last but not least...

Cache Valley Fall Workshop Review

"Three Ladies and Artful Expressions"
   Eighteen student artists, ranging from beginner to accomplished artists, enjoyed three days of artful felicity during a three day workshop sponsored by the Utah Watercolor Society-Cache Valley Chapter. The workshop was taught by seasoned artists Dianne Adams, Lynda Burruss, and Kristi Grussendorf, all members of the Cache Valley chapter.
    Lynda took us back to some basics with lessons in Elements of Design (line, color, shape, value, texture, and space/form), and Principles of Design (rhythm, harmony, repetition with variation, unity, balance, contrast, conflict, gradation, dominance, and emotion.) “All principles are part of each element,” she said. Gene Klatt one of the students artists said, “It was very helpful to learn how the elements of design and principles of design can be used to critique your own work and the work of others.”
    Dianne’s goal for the workshop was to teach us about value: “ If you want your focal point to pop out,” she said, “paint your focal point with your darkest dark and your lightest light. Also remember that value trumps color.” Dianne also suggested using red cellophane over a photograph to see the values easier.
    Kristi emphasized the importance of art education, whether formal or self taught, and impressed us with the importance of daily drawing practice and exercises. Kristi loves the freshness of white paper left untouched in an art piece. It makes a piece of art sing, she said, and she very gets emotional when a piece of art work comes together harmoniously.
    The workshop was invigorating and put us on a three day high! No caffeine needed here! Gene Klatt overwhelmingly said, “The drive up to Logan was very worth the workshop with these three artists.”
    A huge “Thank You” goes out to our workshop organizers, Sherrill Gordon and Cindy Budge, for the preparation of the three days of workshop and, of course, to our three artist teachers, Dianne, Lynda, and Kristi, for the days spend with us and the days they had spent in preparation as well. Last but not least, thanks to all the student artists who attended and asked their questions and shared their knowledge with us all. You made it a great workshop.

Three Ladies and Artful Expressions
Nov. 18, 19 & 20, 2010UWS-CVC is excited to host a 3 day watercolor workshop,
Our very own Fun & Excellent teachers are:
Kristi Grussendorf, Dianne Adams and Lynda Burruss.

They will rotate presentations so while one is presenting, the other two will be giving us help.
We will get lots of individual attention and it will be awesome!!!!!
It will be held at the Cache County School District office,
2063 N. 1200 E. North Logan.
Cost is $50 a day or $140 for all three days.

Thurs. Nov. 18 will be a day to help develop creativity with fun, short projects.
Fri. & Sat will focus on elements of painting our questionnaire indicated you wanted help with:
Maintaining freshness, simplifying shapes, composition and value.
Lunch will be provided each day and you may be asked to bring a simple item or two.
Please respond ASAP to Sherrill Gordon with a $50 deposit to hold your place by Oct. 10th or bring it to the meeting on Tues. Oct. 12th.

More on Workshop Artist Laurel Hart

Laurel Hart's paintings have hung in national juried exhibitions from coast to coast, including those of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. Her work has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic and the popular watercolor books, Splash Eight, and Splash Nine. She is the author of the book, Putting People in Your Paintings, published by North Light Books in 2007. Laurel recently achieved signature membership in the American Watercolor Society, the fulfillment of a longtime dream for her, and holds additional signature memberships in the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation Society, and the Utah Watercolor Society. Her paintings have won numerous awards, including the Gold Medal of Honor in the 2005 American Watercolor Society International Exhibition, one of the highlights of her art career. Her work can be found in public and private collections throughout the country, including the Utah State Capitol Building. In June of 2008, Utah’s then Governor, Jon Huntsman, honored her with a one person show at the Governor’s Mansion. Currently, Laurel has been invited to teach workshops and present demonstrations for various art organizations.

Many of us had the wonderful opportunity to spend Friday and Saturday with Salt Lake artist Laurel Hart as she shared her "laundry method" of painting. Laurel is a master at simplifying complex subjects to render beautiful representations by capturing the overall pattern of light and shadow. She has earned signature membership in the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, American Watercolor Society and the Utah Watercolor Society. Laurel taught with slides, demonstrations, and individual help as we practiced her techniques. Two members of our Utah Watercolor Society-Cache Valley Chapter were accepted into the 35th annual Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibit. The opening is May 14, 7-9 pm. The show goes from May 14-June 28 and is located at Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 West 3100 South, West Valley City, 801-965-5100.
